As the peak of Coronavirus struck and the restrictions of lockdown tightened, it was easy to think about the things we couldn’t do and the people we couldn’t see. However, rather than dwelling on matters beyond our control, I decided to base one of my final year projects on how to keep positive during a pandemic.

Dear Lillie, A Letter Before Lockdown
The pandemic has turned our lives upside down but it’s important to keep looking at the positives through all the confusion and disruption. I was asked to write a short piece for my local village newsletter, summarising how life as a final year university student has been affected in recent weeks. The letter contains thoughts and tips on how to survive a pandemic and has been written as though I was able to advise myself what to do seven weeks ago, before the lockdown began.
2019 Round-Up & What’s in Store for 2020
2019 was a big year for creativity with bold designers, “putting personality at the forefront of projects” (It’s Nice That), and creating pieces of work that mimicked the powerful movements gathering momentum across the globe. The Greta Grotesk typeface; designed by Tal Shub, and the Quid Pro Sans typeface; which was designed by Rick Banks and let’s you type in Donald Trump’s giant felt tip handwriting, were two pieces of design which opened my mind up to a different side of typography, communicating ideas through the aesthetic of each character, as well as the language itself. Joel Swanson
It’s been a busy first term of third year at NTU and whilst I have, without a doubt, neglected my design blog, I have discovered so many artists, designers and agencies which have helped fuel a particularly challenging and innovative start to my professional portfolio.
Over the next few weeks I hope to document the specific artists or design solutions that have guided me through the first two projects of third year, starting with one of the most expressive typographers I have ever come across, Joel Swanson.
The Canadian Rockies
After spending the last year saving up my pennies and pounds, I was able to go on an adventure of a lifetime to explore a country I have wanted to visit for as long as I can remember, Canada.
D&AD Festival 2019
After submitting my second year body of work for grading, I hopped aboard a London bound Megabus and made my way down to the D&AD Festival 2019. I’ve never attended a design festival before so obtaining a ticket through my university was both exciting and quite intriguing; What would it be like? Who would be there? What would I see? What would inspire me?
Ideas On Paper
Ideas On Paper is perhaps one of my favourite places to search for inspiration when I am suffering from the inevitable ‘designer’s block’ during a project. It is a beautifully laid out, independent magazine and book shop located in the pocket of Cobden Chambers, Nottingham. The shop sources works from all over the world, talking about art, design, architecture, illustration, travel, lifestyle, niche hobbies, food and so much more, making it the perfect place to go and find your next essential read.
Godfrey Bikewear Photoshoot
Over the last six months I have been lucky enough to work as a design assistant for Godfrey Sports, a sports kit company located in the heart of Nottingham. They specialise in rowing and cycling kit, which is right up my street, as I spend a lot of my time rowing on the River Trent with my university club.
Cafe Coco Tang
Cafe Coco Tang is another hidden gem in Nottingham that I recently stumbled upon for a bite to eat. I’ve often enjoyed a cocktail evening in the underground basement bar but never had the pleasure of visiting their secret roof garden.
Leeds Studio Visit: Elmwood
One hundred and thirty NTU graphic design students made their way to Leeds to get a small taste for the industry and source inspiration to kick-start a new project. Among the studios were Robot Food, Something More, Split and the agency that I was lucky enough to visit, Elmwood. Continue reading →
